Roof Terrace, Antwerp

What we did

On a rooftop on the Belgielei in Antwerp, Marcotte Style turned a bare terrace into an outdoor room. The decking, the planters, the lighting, the pergola, the furniture and the wall panels were all part of one commission, carried out by one team.

Terrace

The roof was laid out as a series of outdoor rooms: a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable aluminium louvres over the dining table, strips of lawn set between hardwood decking, and a lit glass channel running along the parapet. The whole plan was drawn up in house and rendered in photorealistic 3D before anything was built, so the pergola, the planters and the lighting lines could be set out around the existing chimneys and the wrought iron railing. Recessed deck uplights, LED lines inside the louvre blades and colour changing planters let the terrace move from a bright lunch to a night scene, all installed and styled by our own team.

The layout was drawn up in advance and worked out in photorealistic 3D before anything was ordered. That is why the hardwood decking, the lawn strips and the illuminated water channel line up the way they do, and why the pergola, the planters and the loungers share the same widths and the same graphite and white palette.

The photographs show how the materials answer each other. Warm hardwood runs across the whole floor and returns in the frames around the printed woodland panels, which bring a forest onto a city rooftop. Graphite aluminium ties the pergola, the loungers and the dining chairs together, and white returns in the planters and the table tops. After dark the built in lighting takes over: recessed spots in the deck, LED lines under the adjustable pergola blades and colour changing light inside the planters and along the water channel.

Design, production, installation and styling were all handled in house, with one point of contact from the first plan to the last light setting.
