What we did

In this house in Zonhoven the bespoke cabinetry does the work that walls usually do. A full height oak volume stands free behind the bed and turns the back of the bedroom into a walk in dressing.

In the entrance a dark panelled wall carries a mirror, a floating oak shelf and an upholstered bench, so the hall works as a room instead of a corridor.

Hall

The entrance is lined in dark wood panelling with a single floating oak shelf, a full height mirror and a slim buttoned bench on a chrome frame, so the arrival reads as one composed wall rather than a set of separate pieces. The panelling, the shelf and the mirror were drawn up in house and rendered in photorealistic 3D before production, which is how the joints land where they do around the front door.

Behind the bed an oak partition works as both a headboard wall and the way into the dressing, keeping the sleeping area free of visible storage. The partition, the wardrobe fronts and the curtain track were made to measure in our own atelier and fitted by our own team.

In the study the same oak comes back as a slatted panel behind the desk and as a floating worktop that runs into the window reveal.

The dressing runs as a corridor between white high gloss fronts and warm oak, with a make up shelf, a full height mirror and a run of drawers finished with a stitched leather top. The handles are recessed black grips let into the oak so the fronts stay flush, and every drawer is fitted out inside. The angled oak reveals around the shelf and the openings were set out in advance so the grain runs on from wall to shelf.

The material palette is deliberately short. Warm oak, matt white and a deep smoked brown return in every space, with recessed black handles as the only visible hardware. In the study the same oak comes back as a slatted panel behind the desk and as a floating worktop that runs into the window reveal.

It fits together because it was drawn before it was built. Marcotte Style set out each room in plans and in photorealistic 3D of the actual spaces, so the dressing, the hall unit and the study wall were dimensioned against one another long before the first board was cut.
