Oak Furniture

Marcotte Style sells oak furniture for every room: dining tables, chairs and bar stools on oak legs, sideboards, display cabinets, bookcases, coffee tables, desks, bedside tables, hallway furniture and bathroom furniture. Most of it is solid oak, natural or oiled, and many models also come in a painted version. Dining tables and many other pieces can be made to measure; we draw them in 3D first. You can see and touch the furniture in our showroom in Antwerp, with free advice on site, and we deliver and install throughout Belgium.

On this page you will find every oak collection by room, the difference between solid oak, an oak top and painted wood, the finishes, guide prices and answers to the questions we hear most often in the showroom.

Dining room

Oak dining tables

The oak dining tables range from 160 to 290 cm long, and extend up to 370 cm. The Alder comes in six lengths, from 180 × 105 to 280 × 120 cm. The Orlan extends from 170 to 370 cm, in solid oak throughout or with an oak top on a white or black base. If you like a worn-in top, look at the Croza and the Linear in rustic brushed, oiled oak. The Kloster comes in two wood grades, A and 2B, with a clear price difference (see finishes below).

Allow about 60 cm of table edge per person: 180 cm seats six comfortably, 220 to 240 cm seats eight, and from 260 cm ten. Large tables are grouped under dining tables for 8 or more, extending models under extendable dining tables. To compare oak with ceramic, see all dining tables.

Dining chairs on oak legs

Upholstered chairs on wooden legs suit an oak table. The Canon and the Jaguar stand on oak legs and come in fabric and Alcantara, in several colours. All models are under classic dining chairs. Leave 28 to 32 cm between seat and table top; with a 77 cm high table that means a seat height of 45 to 48 cm.

Bar stools on oak legs

For the kitchen island there are classic bar stools with an upholstered seat, several of them (Canon, Elise, Dinos) on natural oak legs. An island about 90 cm high needs a seat height of 60 to 65 cm.

Sideboards and buffets

The sideboards and buffets in solid oak range from compact models to wall-filling units. The Ronda sideboard comes 120, 180 and 240 cm wide, each 45 cm deep and 78 cm high. The Augusta is 200 × 40 × 80 cm, the Arden 225 × 50 × 90 cm in natural oak, and the Aubigny pairs a white cabinet with an oak top.

Display cabinets

An oak display cabinet with glass doors keeps china and glassware dust-free and on view. The Lancaster (112 × 50 × 203 cm) comes in natural, brown brushed, black and white-washed oak. The Vezelay is a narrow tall cabinet, 73 cm wide and 228 cm high; the Senlis is 114 cm wide. For a low cabinet under a window, the Colmar is 179 cm wide and 78 cm high. More glass-door models are under glass display cabinets.

Living room

Oak coffee tables

The oak coffee tables range from 90 × 65 to 150 × 110 cm. The Harper and the Crestwood are square, in 100 and 120 cm, in natural oak or with a black or white base. The Tarifa comes in four sizes and the Luna is a set of two nesting tables in solid oak. A coffee table works best at about two thirds of the sofa's length, 40 to 45 cm from the seat. Narrow tables for behind a sofa or in a hallway are under console tables.

TV cabinets

Among the TV cabinets, the Augusta is the solid oak model, 160 cm wide. The Belmont (248 cm) is solid wood, painted white or taupe. The other TV cabinets are veneer or contemporary Italian wall units; if you need an oak TV cabinet in another size, ask about made to measure. Choose a cabinet 30 to 40 cm wider than the screen.

Bookcases and hutches

The bookcases range from the narrow Sarlat (71 × 39 × 197 cm) to wall-filling units: the Smedor is 240 cm wide and 230 cm high, the Saumur 286 cm and the Provins 340 cm. For tall cabinets, also measure the ceiling height and the way in, because a 230 cm cabinet still has to be stood upright.

Storage cabinets

For closed storage there are the storage cabinets, such as the Jerez (80 × 38 × 128 cm) in solid oak and the tall Loudun at 240 cm.

Bedroom

Bedside tables

The oak bedside and end tables include the Annecy (50 × 33 × 60 cm) and the taller Cahors (40 × 34 × 70 cm). A bedside table sits best at about mattress height or slightly above.

Dressers and wardrobes

The Augusta also comes as a 240 × 56 × 85 cm dresser in solid oak. All models are under dressers and wardrobes.

Mirrors

The mirrors with an oak frame range from the narrow Beaugency (50 × 160 cm) to the wide Chaumont (115 × 160 cm), useful above a dresser or sideboard.

Hallway, study and bathroom

Hallway furniture

The hallway furniture combines coat rack, bench and storage. The Sancerre is a complete hall unit of 205 × 65 × 210 cm in solid oak.

Desks

The oak desks range from the compact Auray (109 × 60 cm) to the Auxerre (140 × 70 cm) and the Montreuil (160 × 70 cm). A 70 cm deep top leaves room for a screen and a keyboard.

Bathroom furniture

Oak works in a bathroom too, provided you ventilate well and don't leave water standing. The bathroom furniture includes the Hartwell double vanity (150 cm) with mirror cabinet, the tall Roscoff cabinet (49 × 39 × 160 cm) and the Baldo mirror in solid oak. Separate cabinets are under bathroom cabinets.

Solid oak, an oak top or painted wood

Many of our models come in three versions, and it pays to tell them apart:

  • Solid oak, natural: the whole piece is oak. This is the most expensive version.
  • Painted with an oak top: the cabinet or base is painted solid wood (white, black or bordeaux), the top is oak. You get warm wood where you touch it, at a lower price.
  • Fully painted: solid wood in white, black, bordeaux or another colour, with no visible oak.

The price difference is large. The 180 cm Chablis dining table costs € 3,789 in solid oak and € 2,443 with an oak top on a painted base. The Sarlat bookcase costs € 2,123 in oak and € 1,370 painted, the Annecy bedside table € 1,067 against € 688.

A few collections also hold furniture that isn't oak, such as NovaSolo's white-painted ranges in solid mahogany and the veneer TV cabinets. To be sure, look for "Solid Oak" in the product name, or ask us.

Finishes and wood grade

Natural and oiled

Oiled oak feels natural and matt. You can lightly sand a scratch or ring locally and re-oil it, without treating the whole top.

Rustic brushed

Brushing removes the soft parts of the grain, so the grain becomes tactile. Small marks from daily use show less, which helps in a family with children.

Black, white-washed or brown

Some models, such as the Lancaster display cabinet, come in natural, brown brushed, black and white-washed oak. White-washed oak keeps a room light; black oak gives contrast next to a light floor.

Grade A or 2B

Oak is graded by the number of knots and colour variation. Grade A has a calm top with few knots. Grade 2B shows more knots and colour variation and costs less: the Kloster dining table starts at € 1,815 in grade A and € 1,637 in 2B. For a country interior many customers choose the livelier top on purpose.

Made-to-measure oak furniture

If a standard size doesn't fit your room, or you want a different width, height or finish, dining tables and many other models can be made to measure. We draw the piece in 3D first, so you see how it sits in your room before you order. Feel free to bring a plan or the room dimensions to the showroom.

Caring for oak

  • Dust with a dry or slightly damp cloth and dry straight away. Don't leave water on the top.
  • Wipe up spilled wine, coffee or grease quickly, especially on oiled oak.
  • Use mats under hot dishes and glasses.
  • Re-oil an oiled top when it feels dry or dull, usually once or twice a year.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners and products containing silicone.
  • Don't place oak furniture right against a radiator or stove: wood that dries out quickly can crack.
  • Oak changes colour in daylight. Move objects on a table or cabinet now and then so no lighter patches form.

Frequently asked questions about oak furniture

What does an oak dining table cost?

A solid oak dining table starts at about € 1,637 with us (Kloster, grade 2B). A 180 cm table such as the Alder starts around € 2,427, an extendable table up to 370 cm around € 4,952. Made to measure is priced per table.

Is all your oak furniture solid?

Furniture with "Solid Oak" in the name is oak throughout. There are also versions with an oak top on a painted base, and fully painted versions in solid wood. A few TV cabinets are oak veneer; the product name says so.

Can oak furniture be made to measure?

Yes, dining tables and many other models can be made to measure in length, width or finish. We make a 3D drawing first, so you see the result before you order.

Which finish is easiest to maintain?

Rustic brushed oak hides small scratches and marks best. Oiled oak is easiest to repair, because you can sand and re-oil a spot locally.

What is the difference between grade A and 2B?

Grade A has few knots and an even colour. Grade 2B has more knots and colour variation, looks more rustic and costs less.

Does oak still move after delivery?

Solid wood expands and shrinks slightly with humidity. That's normal. Keep the room at an even temperature and don't place the piece against a heat source.

Can I combine oak furniture with an oak floor?

You can, but choose a clearly different tone or finish from the floor, or a piece with a painted base. Two almost identical oak tones side by side often look like a mistake.

Do you deliver throughout Belgium?

Yes, we deliver and install throughout Belgium, including large pieces such as wall units and long dining tables.
