A bedroom built around calm

A country bedroom combines character with calm. A headboard with personality, textiles that breathe, and a thoughtful material mix that feels good every morning.

A good bedroom is what you do not see: storage hidden, colours calm, lines clean.

01 · The essentials

Six elements, no more

A good bed, two bedside tables, two lamps, one wardrobe

01

The bed

The bed is the heart of the bedroom. Pick a headboard with character (classic tufted, paneled detail, or clean wood) and bedding that pairs with the rest.

Two bedside tables

Placed symmetrically on both sides. With storage and space for a lamp and book. Height equal to mattress level for comfortable reach.

Two table lamps

2700K warm white, dimmable. Bright enough for reading. Avoid ceiling spots as only lighting.

04

The wardrobe

Built-in or walk-in for storage. Outside the bedroom if possible, or as a built-in wall so it visually disappears.

The right arrangement

Symmetry, breathing room, and what NOT to put above the bed

Bett position

Bett centred, not in a corner

Place the bed in the middle of the longest wall, with minimum 70cm clearance on both sides. At the foot end: minimum 80cm. Otherwise the bedroom feels cramped, even if it appears to fit.

  • Bett with headboard against the wall, not under a window
  • 70cm clearance on both sides for bedside tables and circulation
  • 80cm clearance at the foot end for circulation or a small bench
  • Not under a skylight in the sleeping position

Storage

The wardrobe not in the bedroom itself

A built-in wardrobe or separate dressing room creates the most spacious feel. A freestanding wardrobe works equally well, especially when it is a statement piece in oak or painted wood that acts as a focal point.

  • Built-in wardrobe as wall element (60-80cm deep)
  • Separate dressing room if space allows
  • Under-bed storage as last resort, for seasonal items
  • Custom is almost always the right choice here, not standard wardrobes

Frequently asked questions

What colours suit a country bedroom?

Maximum two colour families. A neutral base (off-white, greige, taupe) with one warm accent (oak, bronze or soft green). Nothing more. Calm is the rule, so less is always more.

Wooden or upholstered headboard?

Wooden headboards age classically and stay beautiful longer. Upholstered (linen, leather) feels softer and fits modern country. Both work. Tufted or buttoned headboards bring classic character, simpler shaker styles work in modern country settings. Both are timeless when matched to the room.

How much space around the bed?

Minimum 70cm on both sides of the bed for bedside tables and circulation. At the foot end, minimum 80cm clearance. Less than that feels cramped, even if it appears to fit.

What lighting in the bedroom?

Two table lamps beside the bed (2700K, dimmable) for reading and ambience. A dimmable ceiling light for function. Optionally a wall lamp for accent. Avoid ceiling spots only, that gives clinical lighting.

Rug under the bed or not?

Yes. Rug in wool or natural fibre, either fully under the bed (with 60cm overhang on each side) or from the foot end. Both work. A small rug directly beside the bed looks cluttered.

Bedroom in a small space?

Choose a lower bed height (no high box spring), one consistent colour family of white/cream, built-in wardrobes instead of standalone, and strategically placed mirrors to create depth. Keep standalone furniture proportions in mind so the room reads spacious.
