What type of project

Country living is no longer rustic-cluttered or pseudo-Provence. It is calm, honest materials, and furniture that lasts.

At Marcottestyle we combine 25 years of interior architecture with our own Country Classic collection. This guide brings together what we are asked most often: which country style suits which home, how to design a living room or bedroom without becoming sentimental, which materials and colours work, and which mistakes to avoid.

No catalogue cliches. Concrete choices backed by projects in Belgium, France and Spain. From a townhouse in Antwerp to a villa in Knokke.

01 · The styles

Four country style directions

Classic · Modern country · Refined country · Cottage

Classic country interior, mansion project Leuven
01 · Classic country

Flemish, crafted, warm

Massif oak in its natural grain, panel doors with mouldings, antique finds alongside bespoke pieces. The style most people picture when they think of a "true country home". Works best in old farmhouses, manor homes and renovated country estates.

Modern country interior, contemporary home Grimbergen
02 · Modern country

Straighter, monochrome, calm

Straight cabinet doors without panel or moulding, one consistent wood, neutral tones (greige, taupe, matte black). The country soul stays, the ornament leaves. Our most requested style in 2026.

Refined country penthouse Brussels
03 · Refined country

Architectural, dark, minimal

The most polished country variant. Architectural straight lines, darker palette (matte black, anthracite, dark oak), heavy natural stone and minimal styling. Suits modern villas and penthouses where warmth is wanted without rusticity.

Cottage style interior, project Overijse
04 · Cottage

English, light, expressive

Painted shaker cabinets in muted green, soft blue or off-white. Open shelving, floral patterns in textiles, antique porcelain accents. Works in smaller spaces and for those who want a clear English cottage feel.

02 · Room by room

Practical advice per room

With the right products for each space

01 · Living room

A country living room that does not turn sweet

The living room is where country living usually goes wrong: too much wood, too many cushions, too much pattern. What works is one focal piece, three supporting elements, and the rest quiet.

  • One large deep sofa in a neutral fabric (taupe, sand, cognac leather)
  • A solid wood coffee table as the anchor (oak, walnut, or reclaimed wood)
  • A tall cabinet or buffet as vertical line (open shelving or panel doors)
  • Simple textiles: linen or wool, no synthetic shine
  • A rug in natural fibre (jute, sisal, wool)
  • Floor and table lighting, never only ceiling spots

02 · Dining room

The dining table as the family anchor

In a country home the dining table is the heart, not an accessory. A long solid wood table, with chairs that can vary in form but share a tone. A pendant light hung low to define the table.

  • Massif wood dining table with thick legs (oak, walnut, or dark pine)
  • 4 to 8 chairs, mixed fabrics or leather, one colour family
  • A low-hanging pendant above the centre of the table
  • A buffet or sideboard against the wall for tableware
  • No clutter: the eye needs places to rest

03 · Bedroom

Calm as the rule

A country bedroom is an exercise in restraint. The bed can have character (a nice headboard, a wooden frame), but otherwise keep it calm: max two colours, simple textiles, no clutter above the bed.

  • Lit with wooden or fabric headboard, nothing more
  • Two bedside tables, placed symmetrically
  • Bedding in linen or cotton, one colour family
  • Two table lamps with warm light (2700K)
  • A walk-in closet for storage, not visible in the bedroom itself

04 · Kitchen and dining

A kitchen that is not a showroom

In a country home the kitchen belongs with the dining area. No sharp separation, no 24-module look. Honest materials, a sink block in bluestone or natural stone, and open elements that actually get used.

  • Open-plan kitchen, not hidden behind doors
  • Worktop in solid wood or natural stone, no high-gloss composite
  • Islands welcome, but minimum 3m wide and 4m long
  • Lighting in four layers: ceiling, island, worktop, ambient
  • For custom kitchens, see our interior architecture side

05 · Office, dressing, hallway

Workspaces that feel part of the home

The often-ignored spaces (office, dressing, entrance, reading nook) are where country style becomes personal. A solid desk beneath a window, a cabinet in a niche, a reading chair beside a lamp.

  • Massif wood desk (oak, walnut) instead of a metal office desk
  • Étagères to the ceiling, open or with panel doors
  • A tall lounge or armchair for reading, with its own table lamp
  • Console or sideboard in the hallway with mirror above
  • For walk-in closets: bespoke beats webshop
03 · Materials

Materials that last for decades

What we use as standard, and what we avoid

Marcottestyle interior showcasing solid wood, stone and natural textiles
01

Massif oak

The signature material. Oiled or lye-treated, never veneered. Ages along with the home, stays beautiful for 30+ years.

02

Lin

For curtains, cushions, sofa upholstery. Wrinkles softly, breathes, looks natural over time.

03

Belgian bluestone

For worktops, sink blocks and floors. Retains warmth, scratches that fade into patina, ages elegantly.

04

Laiton and bronze

For hardware, lighting and accents. Patinates to a rich golden-brown tone over years.

04 · Colour palette

The country colour palette

Five tones that appear in every Marcottestyle project. Combine two or three, never all five.

05 · Lighting

Lighting in four layers

The biggest reason an interior looks catalogue-like is not the furniture. It is the lighting. A country home needs four layers minimum, not one.

  • Ceiling light · functional, dimmable, 2700K warm
  • Table lamps · ambient, on cabinets and sideboards
  • Floor lamps · for reading nooks and dim corners
  • Accent lighting · to highlight artwork or architecture

Avoid LED strips in skirtings. Avoid ceiling spotlights in the living room. Use dimmers throughout.

06 · Mistakes

Seven country interior mistakes we see often

01

Too much wood in one room

Wooden floor, table, cabinet, beams, TV unit. At some point it feels like a log cabin. Keep at least one large surface non-wood.

02

Faux beams

Fake ceiling beams that carry nothing structural look immediately cheap. If the home does not have them, do not add them.

03

Too much pattern and cushions

One bold pattern per room, max two subtler ones. Four cushions per sofa, not eight. The eye needs rest points.

04

Mixing too many wood tones

Chêne, walnut, cherry and pine together makes a room visually restless. Pick one main wood species and commit.

05

Ceiling spots as only lighting

Works for a clinic, not for living. Add table, floor and accent lights for depth.

06

"Country lookalike" materials

High-gloss MDF with wood print. Composite worktops with "stone look". PVC floors with "oak appearance". These age within 3 years.

07

Pure Provence in a Flemish farmhouse

Terre cuite floors and bright yellow walls work in the Provence. In Flemish light they become kitsch. Work with regional proportions.

Frequently asked questions

What is country classic interior design?

Country classic interior design uses natural materials (solid wood, natural stone, linen), warm tones, and craftsmanship-driven details. Marcottestyle combines this with our own furniture collection so you get advice and products from one source.

What is the difference between classic and modern country?

Classic country uses panel doors, mouldings, antique furniture and warm wood tones. Modern country keeps the natural materials but uses straighter lines, neutral colours (greige, taupe, soft black) and minimal ornament. Modern country has been the most requested variant in Belgium since 2024.

What does a complete country interior cost in Belgium?

A living room setup (sofa, coffee table, cabinet, lighting, rug, decoration) ranges from 8,000 to 25,000 euros depending on brand choices. A complete home interior through Marcottestyle (all rooms, bespoke, with guidance) ranges from 40,000 to 150,000 euros.

What colours work in a country interior?

Off-white, greige, warm taupe, and natural wood tones are the base. Accents in brass, bronze or matte black give character. Avoid bright or pure colours.

Does country style work in a modern home?

Yes, in the modern country variant. Straight architecture pairs well with warm materials (oak, linen, leather) as long as the lines stay calm. Avoid antiques or heavy mouldings in a sharply modern home.

Does a kitchen island work in a country kitchen?

Yes, the kitchen island is one of the most requested elements. Marcottestyle designs islands with a solid oak base and natural stone worktop. Minimum required space: 3m wide, 4m long.

Does Marcottestyle offer in-home consultations?

Yes. Beyond the webshop, Marcottestyle offers personal in-home interior consultations by interior architects with 25+ years of experience. We work throughout Belgium and in selected European cities for residential, hotel and hospitality projects.

Can I combine webshop items with custom-made furniture?

Yes. Many clients choose a mix: standard items from the Marcottestyle webshop for budget-conscious choices, combined with custom pieces (cabinets, dining tables, walk-in closets) where the difference truly matters.
