View dining tables Size guide firstIn a country home, the dining table is the heart, not an accessory.
An oak dining table is a choice for 25 to 40 years. Which size fits your space? Oiled or lye-treated? With or without extension? Below the complete guide, written by interior architects with 500+ projects of experience.
The right size per number of people
Plan minimum 60cm table width per person
Compact table
For apartments and small dining areas. Square or rectangular.
Standard size
The most requested size. Works in 90% of average Belgian homes.
Family table
Large dining table for families and frequent dinners. Requires minimum 4x5m space.
Banquet size
For large living kitchens and manor homes. Requires minimum 5x6m space around the table.
Three finishes for solid oak
Each with its own character and maintenance rules
Oiled oak
The natural colour and grain remain visible. Feels warm to the touch. Needs re-oiling every 2 years with natural oil. Our most requested option.
Lye-treated oak
Lighter and greyer than natural. The lye removes tannin so it stays nicely light. Largely self-maintaining, no re-oiling needed.
Fumed / smoked oak
Darker, more character. Works especially in modern country and refined interiors. Minimum maintenance required.
Which chairs to pair with an oak dining table
Mixing is allowed, but keep one consistent element

Massiv wood with linen or leather
For a classic country setting: chairs with a wooden frame and upholstered seat in linen, rough cotton or cognac leather. Mix different chairs in one colour family for character.
- 6 chairs along the length, 2 head chairs at the ends
- Seat height 45-47cm with a 75cm high table
- Minimum 60cm spacing per chair
- Mix in shape is fine, keep one material family

Cleaner with a pendant that defines
For modern country: simpler chairs with straight lines, a low-hanging pendant that marks the table top. Less ornament, more space around each element.
- Pendant 70-90cm above the table top
- Pendant diameter: 1/3 of table width
- Uniform chairs for a calmer look
- No table runner, just individual placemats

Frequently asked questions
What size oak dining table for 6 people?
For 6 people, choose a table 180 to 200cm long and 90 to 100cm wide. Plan minimum 60cm table width per person. For rectangular tables: 4 chairs along the length, 1 at each end. For 8 people, move to 220cm+.
Oiled or lye-treated oak dining table?
Oiled oak keeps the natural colour and grain, needs re-oiling every 2 years with natural oil. Lye-treated oak is lighter, greyer, and largely self-maintaining. Marcottestyle offers both, also fumed for a darker accent.
What does a solid oak dining table cost?
A Belgian solid oak custom dining table ranges from 1,500 to 4,500 euros depending on size, finish and design. Standard tables from our collection start around 1,500-2,500 euros. Very large tables (240cm+) or unique designs exceed 5,000 euros.
How to maintain an oak table?
Dust with a slightly damp cloth. Oiled oak: re-oil every 2 years with natural oil (not silicone-based). For stains: wipe immediately dry, do not rub in. No harsh cleaners, no hot dishes directly on the table (use coasters).
Custom or standard table?
Custom is worth it if you have an unusual space, want a specific wood type, or a unique detail (wrought iron base, specific finish). For standard sizes in oiled or lye-treated oak our webshop collection usually works just as well and ships faster.
Round or rectangular?
Round works for 4-6 people in square rooms, social because everyone sees each other. Rectangular is more efficient for 6+ people and fits longer spaces. Oval combines the sociability of round with the capacity of rectangular, but costs more.
